Tattoo Expo History

By Tattoo Dave Amchir
Founder & Coordinator
South Florida Tattoo Expo

I decided to start this expo in South Florida over two decades ago.  Most of you who know me, know that I am an avid fan of tattoos and the industry in general.  After traveling around and visiting other expos around the country, it made me think, we really should have one in South Florida.  And with a lot of hard work, that is where it all began.

My former partner Sicko, of Funhouse Tattoos,  came on board as our sponsor for the 2nd Annual Expo and was with me for 8 years.  I thank him for his loyal support and dedication to the South Florida Tattoo Expo and wish him well in his future endeavors, it was a fun ride!  Ten years ago I welcomed Dan King of Cool Cat Tattoo as our new sponsor for the South Florida Tattoo expo and look forward to many more to come!

Our first expo, back in 1996, was held at the Sheraton Hotel on Griffin and I95.  Then the next two years we spent at the Marriott on Cypress Creek and Andrews.  After that, we spent two years at the Clarion on Hallandale Beach Blvd and A1A.  Outgrowing all three of these hotels over the years, we finally settled at the Coral Springs Marriott Resort from 2001-2006.  Six years ago we moved to the Deerfield Beach Hilton and have since returned back to the Coral Springs Marriott Resort!

Adopting the same charity benefiting from the SFPC Christmas Toys in the Sun Run, the Children’s Cancer Treatment Center @ Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital, this event has raised over $900,000 to date.

This year’s 3-day event beginning Friday and ending Sunday has a packed schedule including 14 live national and local bands that donate their time to perform throughout the weekend. Kicking off our first annual were the controversial Genitorturers.  And since, we have had special guest appearances from members of Hate Breed, New Found Glory, just to name a few.  Tattoo artists and vendors from all of the world, including Germany, Austria, Japan and South America fill the 120 + booths that consume the Coral Springs Marriott Resort.

In addition, we have nightly fetish shows for adults only and suspension shows throughout the weekend.  For those of you who do not know what “suspension” is, let me educate you.  Piercing enthusiasts choose to have different parts of their flesh pierced, most commonly the back, with hooks of different sizes and then they are suspended from the ceiling or other devices.  This is a site to see.  We advise those with weak stomachs to watch at their own discretion.

There is something for everyone at our show.  Whether you are inked or not, you can come out and have a good time and know you are helping a great cause.  There is an entry age limit and parental discretion is advised.

We have a 100% volunteer staff.  Everyone you see at the event, handling everything from admissions to security, donate their time the entire weekend to ensure that everything runs smoothly.  If you are interested in volunteering, please call 954-868-7040.

Special guest appearances in the past and ones that have been known to ‘pop-in’ include WWE stars Gangrel and Luna as well as the Punisher and The Warlord.  We’ve also had football and baseball celebrities from the Miami Dolphins and Florida Marlins.  Ron Jeremy, well-known porn star, made an appearance two years in a row, and ex-heavyweight champion Michael Moorer also stopped by along with and Billy Lane of Choppers Inc.

We take pride in the fact that all proceeds benefit charity and that so many people involved donate their time and energy to turn this event into the success it has become over the years.
